Glico Insurance, an insurance company in Ghana, has donated an amount of GH¢20,000 the Ghana Sports Authority for victims of an accident that occurred at Offinso in the Ashanti Region some weeks ago.
It would be recalled that some very young football talents encountered a road challenge at Offinso in the Ashanti Region, which resulted in a road accident that sadly took the lives of some of the players, while some sustained injuries.
Glico’s donation is in fulfilment of its commitment to safeguarding the lives of Ghanaians by standing shoulder to shoulder, and lending a hand of support in the event of an unfavourable life occurrence.
It is also to strengthen the entire sporting authority and to support the entire football fraternity, the bereaved families, as well as the families of the injured, to ensure that they recover.
A short ceremony to present the monetary support to the beneficiaries was held at the Accra Sports Stadium. Present at the meeting were some executives and staff of Glico, the National Sport Authority (NSA), the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS), the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and the media.
Reading a speech on behalf of the Executive Director of Glico, Madam Kukua Apprey, Head of Corporate Affairs, indicated that one of the company’s key areas of social responsibility was in the field of sports, particularly football, hence the donation to the accident victims.
She also said that Glico holds this conviction that sports, particularly football, needs to take its proper place in Ghana. However, for footballers to go all out and excel, the issue of insurance to cover them should not be an option, but a real necessity. Covering our sportsmen and women’s needs to be treated with the utmost importance and urgency, she opined.
She, therefore, indicated that the company would come back to find avenues to support budding future talents under an agreed scheme.
“We also believe that the Ministry of Youth and Sports, together with the Ghana Football Association, would come on board, as we, at Glico, collaborate with them on this as a diverse insurance company.”
Mr Ahmed Osman, Aide to the Minister for Youth and Sports, who spoke on behalf of the Minister, indicated that the donation wasn’t one that the Ministry expected and was very grateful for the support.
He said that though the sports association also supported the victims and bereaved families financially, the monetary support from Glico would go a long way to help the victims and the bereaved families.
“The Minister and his entire team are grateful to you, and we hope that this amount will go a long way to alleviate the pain that the family members of our departed young ones, and also those nursing their wounds.”
He indicated that the Ministry would take the kind gesture into account and also consider its offer of assisting footballers.
