Nana Eric Agyemang Prempeh, Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has on behalf of the government, visited victims who lost their properties in various fire outbreaks in the Kumasi Metropolis to commensurate and sympathise with them.
The visit was also to enable him assess the loss and give the necessary advice to them.
The places visited included Suame Magazine, Aboabo Station and Dagomba Line, which were affected by the fire outbreaks.
According to him, the Suame Magazine industrial hub has been in existence for a long time, and that one cannot write the business history of the country without Magazine.
As a result, the NADMO boss stressed the need for reconstruction and new demarcation of the area to make the place safe in dealing with the perennial fire outbreaks.
He stated that though no life was lost, monies and other items were lost during the unfortunate incident, hence, the need to ensure that proper demarcation is done.
He also entreated the owners of Aboabo Station not to take the law into their own hands, but collaborate with the police to do due diligence to ensure proper investigations into the fire outbreaks.
The NADMO boss urged them to also collaborate with the city engineers to assess the strength of the remaining structures, in order not to rush into any decision without directives from competent engineers.
He also stressed that with the incident at Dagomba Line, the Organisation was going to liaise with the Works and Housing Ministry and Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to ensure that proper measures are put in place to avert such an occurrence in future.
Nana Prempeh disclosed that it was illegal for the settlers to occupy the place in wooden structures with illegal electricity connections.
He cautioned the squatters against burning of tyres and throwing debris into the gutters around them, which practice, he noted, leads to the perennial flooding of the area.
The NADMO Director-General hinted that the Works and Housing and Local Government ministries, as well as other major stakeholders, would confer and come out with concrete decisions and measures as to what to do with the Dagomba Line settlers.
Dr. Osei Bobie Boahen, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Suame, also stated that there was the need to sit down with the workers at Magazine to decide the way forward to modernising the industrial hub and make it more accessible for fire fighters in case of fire outbreaks.
