United Nations Peace (UN) Ambassador Bishop Sam Owusu has called on the Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Alban Kingsford Bagbin, to constitute a committee that would investigate the pandemonium that happened on the floor of the House on the dawn of January 7, 2020.
According to him, the country had come too far to be entertaining such scenes on its national television, where public officers occupying an honourable position as Members of Parliament (MPs) would stoop so low in the manner which they conducted themselves.
The UN Ambassador, in an interview to the media on Thursday in Accra, suggested that the committee, after the investigation, should severely punish all those who would be found culpable of the disturbing scenes.
He said such persons must also be compelled to render unqualified apologies to their respective constituencies and the nation as a whole, adding that the apology should not be in writing, but by speaking.
This, he said, it would go a long way to serve a deterrent to others who desire to and are capable of perpetuating such despicable acts.
He said: “What happened in Parliament is worrying, surprising, beyond reasoning and understanding. Parliament is a representation of the whole nation. Parliament is more important than the seat of government. President’s term may end after four or eight years, but a parliamentarian may retain his or her seat for many years.”
He added that the disturbing scenes created by the parliamentarians had sent bad signals about the country, which is considered the beacon of Africa by the rest of the world.
Bishop Owusu noted that the electorates comported themselves to follow the process to elect them, but in return the misconduct by some MPs was something that should not be swept under the carpet.
“Whenever elections are being held in any part of Africa, Ghanaian leaders are sought to offer their expertise on how the elections should be organised, but has happened will tell [a] totally different story about the country,” he lamented.
The Peace Ambassador, who also is the Leader and Founder of International Power Ministry Network, appealed to President Akufo-Addo to reduce the number of his Cabinet to, at least, 40, and those who would be appointed should be people who are ready to work.
