Merciless armed robbers, numbering about ten, have shot and killed a police officer and robbed a bullion van belonging to the Dunkwa branch of the GCB Bank. The District Police Commander for Adansi Fomena, Superintendent Fii Ochil, who confirmed the robbery incident to The Chronicle, revealed that the miscreants reportedly made away with GH¢500,000 from the bullion van with registration number GT 543-19.
The Police Commander told the Editor of this paper, Mr Emmanuel Akli, in a fellow up interview at press time last night, that the GH¢500,000 he earlier gave the reporter as having been stolen by the robbers was a rough figure given to the police by some of the occupants of the bullion van.
According to him, his outfit was yet to establish the exact amount of money taken away by the robbers.
Superintendent Ochil, during the earlier interview with the reporter of this story, said on Monday, this week, at about 10:00 am, he received a distress call about a shooting incident going on his district. He quickly informed his Divisional Commander who helped him mobilise personnel to the scene.
According to him, when the police reached Nyakomasi, they got information that a bullion van from Dunkwa-on-Offin, belonging to the GCB Bank, and conveying money to New Edubiase GCB had come under attack by some armed young men, numbering about ten.
He revealed that all vehicular movement on the stretch had come to a halt, as the robbers, who apparently emerged from the bush, were firing sporadically into the air whilst robbing their victims.
The Obuasi District Commander noted that during the attack, L/Cpl Martin Baba from the Dunkwa Divisional Command was shot and died instantly.
Two officers from a private security firm – Delta Security Service – escaped the bullets, but were still rushed to to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Obuasi, where they were detained for counselling following the trauma they went through.
Superintendent Ochil further told The Chronicle that no arrest had been made, but that a reinforcement team had been dispatched from Kumasi to beef up his team to search, locate and arrest the robbers.
“We combed the bushes around during the night, but we could not get hold of them.”
He quoted an eyewitness as saying that almost all the robbers were armed with AK47 weapons, and that it was a targeted operation.
