The dust has settled on the brouhaha that characterised the 2020 presidential election, which ended at the Superior Court.
The defeated presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has now openly declared that the outcome of his petition had brought finality to the electoral process.
When the Chief Justice Anin-Yeboah chaired seven-member court unanimously affirmed the victory of the sitting President, Akufo-Addo, his main contender who petitioned the court was not specific with his next move.
Addressing the NDC after the court ruling, Mr Mahama disagreed with the court, but acknowledged that it was a decision that was binding.
Though his posture was not one that convinced everybody he had moved on without seeking a review, he has, after a month, bluntly taken a firm position that the process was over.
He said: “The court case has ended. We were scored 7-0 on many occasions. We asked for replay 7-0, and then one time it even went to 9-0, and the final score was 7-0. And so, it brought to an end the processes of the presidential election, especially, considering that we decided not to go for a review.”
Mr Mahama was addressing the annual conference of the NDC Professionals Forum yesterday, which had the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, and other party members in attendance.
Former President John Mahama said the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) was so vindictive that Ghanaian professionals fear associating with the NDC for fear of losing their jobs, or being hunted by the government.
He said: “I think one of the good things that Pro Forum has done is to increase the confidence of our professional groups in terms of being identified as being proud members of the NDC.”
Before Pro Forum, Mr Mahama observed that “we had a lot of people who support the NDC, but they hide under the covers and are not willing to show their faces as supporters of NDC.”
“Of course, you can understand why. With people who are so vindictive; I mean for many of them who are still in service, I mean showing their faces is often dangerous,” he noted.
According to him, “it’s not the same when NDC is in power,” explaining: “I mean people very freely identify with the NPP when NDC is in power, and they don’t suffer any adverse consequences for it.”
“It’s not the same when they [NPP] are in power. There’s a lot of vindictive hunting down of people who are believed to be NDC and taking them out of jobs. So, this confidence and pride is making more people join the Pro Forum and it’s a very good thing,” Mr Mahama said.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, assured the forum that though he had ascended a high office of the country, he was still a member of the umbrella family.
