Mr. Osei Asibey Antwi, Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has tasked drivers and conductors of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, locally called Adehyie Buses, to always abide by the ethics on our roads to enhance safety in their operations to win the confidence of commuters.
The Mayor gave the admonition when he and some members of the KMA Transport Committee and Board Members of the BRT visited the Kumasi STC bus terminals at Oforikrom to familiarise themselves with operations of the buses and how the workers and staff were functioning.
The visit also coincided with the presentation of diploma certificates to both male and female drivers of the Adehyie buses who undertook a training course in order to run within Kumasi and the nearby municipalities and districts as professionals in driving.
The driving course was organised by the KMA, in collaboration with Scania, manufacturers of the buses, to boost their confidence in the line of duty, and also to sustain the operation of the buses.
He disclosed that a lot of women who were into driving were also trained for gender balance, as none of the female drivers had ever been involved in an accident since their operations begun in Kumasi.
He disclosed that the operation was piloted with six buses in 2017, and that about 60 buses were currently in use.
He reminded them of the task ahead of them to avoid accidents, as they take on a lot of passengers along the routes they ply, hence, the need to train them as professional drivers.
He disclosed that the exercise would be sustained through annual refresher courses to keep the drivers abreast with the growing trends of the transport industry.
Mr Christopher Wiredu, Manager of the STC Bus terminal, expressed his profound gratitude to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly for the kind gesture in joining hands with Scania to enlighten his staff and workers to enhance their professionalism.
He assured them of the readiness of management to make the operations of the buses safe and reliable in the Metropolis, and Ghana as a whole.
