The Member of Parliament (MP) for Evalue Gwira constituency, Kofi Arko Nokoe, had to be ferried in a canoe to be able to reach and interact with the chiefs and people of Bentanase, located at Gwira Manso.
The only route from Axim, the capital of the Municipality, to Bentanase is by water, as a result, the MP and his entourage had no other choice than to travel in a canoe for two and a half hour in order to interact with the chief and people of the area.
The Chief of Gwira Banso, Nana Ette Akrade II, could not hide his joy when he eventually came face-to-face and interacted with the legislator.
At the meeting, held at the community shed, Nana Akrade commended the Legislator for making it by water transport to hold a meeting with them.
Nana Akrade said since 1992, no Legislator had set foot in the area due to the unavailability of a motorable road linking the capital of the Municipality to the place.
He said the only means of transportation to the area, which is by water, had made it impossible for dignitaries, including parliamentarians representing the people, to make it to their community. “Every four years we vote, but we have never set eye on our MP here.”
But for MP Kofi Arko Nokoe, a first time MP, to travel to the community by canoe to interact with them to know their challenges, spoke volumes of the kind of representative he was, Nana Akrade told the meeting.
“I have no doubt in my mind you are in to serve, a reason you and your entourage have ferried to this community to interact with us.”
Nana Akrade, on behalf of the community, told the Legislator that their major challenge was a road and potable drinking water.
He said due to the rate of illegal mining, most of the rivers in the area, which serve as sources drinking water, had been polluted. This, he said, had made potable water difficult to come by.
Kofi Arko Nokoe, on is part, thanked the Chief and people for voting to elect him as their representatives in the house of Parliament.
He said, since he assumed office, he had made it his priority to go round every nook and cranny of the communities to thank the electorate, whether they voted for him or not.
“For the last three months, I have visited every community to show appreciation to the electorate for giving me [the] opportunity to serve them, and today, [it] is your turn,” he said amid clapping and dancing from the community members.
Arko Nokoe pledged to help construct a hand-dug well to serve as a source of drinking water for the community.
