A former Assembly Member for Akyem Tafo in the Abuakwa North Municipality, Mr. Otchere Acheampong, has expressed grave concern over the spate of social ills, particularly wee smoking, that have engulfed Osiem township.
According to the former Assembly Member, these wee smokers, who are mainly young men and women, have reduced the Osiem Lorry Park into a wee smoking hub with little or no regards for the leadership in the area.
He explained that these young men and women smoke the substance, which is believed could lead to mental disorders, in broad daylight with pride and impunity.
The former “small honorable” made the observation in an interview with the Eastern File during a visit to the area by this reporter.
“My brother, I was shocked about what we saw this afternoon. The former President, John Dramani Mahama, attended a funeral of one of our friends here in Osiem, and after the funeral we decided to check something around the lorry park, and to my surprise, these young men and women were smoking wee around without fear and respect for anybody,” he bemoaned.
He attributed the situation to what he described as a breakdown in leadership following the protracted chieftaincy dispute in the area, adding that the earlier the authorities and traditional leaders in the area, and for that matter the municipality, do something about the situation, the better it would be for the development of the area.
He further called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to use his office to bring peace and unity to Osiem, since he knows much about the chieftaincy dispute.
“The Osiem chieftaincy dispute is something that the President knows very well, because he is a former Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, hence, the need to step into the protracted chieftaincy dispute that has affected the development of the area,” he disclosed.
Mr. Acheampong was of the view that the area had suffered lack of development following lack of a substantive chief to galvanise the people, a situation that has created a lawless environment with everyone doing what he or she wanted.
The former Assembly Member and now a member of the Board of Governors at the Saviour Senior High School (SHS), a private second cycle institution in the area, stated that the chieftaincy dispute had brought a lot of instability to Osiem, which was likely to undermine the peace and unity of the area, and by extension Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area.
