A total of 26 years imprisonment has been handed down to two bag snatcher by an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs Priscilla Dapaah Mireku.
The convicts, Chadi Nkrumah, age 28 years, was sentenced to 15 years in absentia on two counts of robbery and conspiracy to commit crime, while Emmanuel Yartey, 24 years, was given 11 years on robbery charges.
According to the brief facts read to the court by Chief Inspector John Gohoho, on November 9, 2019, at about 7:00pm, one Vida Ayimey closed from her shop at Kaneshie and was heading home carrying a black handbag, in which she had kept her sales for the day.
The convicts, who then earned their living respectively as cleaner and Okada riding at James Town and Chorkor, attempt to snatch Vida’s handbag while she was crossing the road.
The Prosecutor indicated to the court that the convicts committed the act while riding on a motorbike.
He said the complainant did not give in, hence, struggled with Chadi, currently at large, who was the pillion rider, over the bag, amid shouting for help.
The struggle ended with the complainant, together with the convicts, falling on the ground, with Vida sustaining severe injuries.
One Amariba rushed to the scene and called the police patrol team, and the convicts were arrested together with the motorbike, and handed over to the Kaneshie Police Station.
