A fuel tanker driver, his mate and a two-year-old boy got burnt beyond recognition when the tanker caught fire and exploded at Onyena Nufo in the Ahafo South West District of Ashanti region on Monday afternoon around 1:30pm.
The ensuing explosion also burnt ten houses into ashes, following which the residents in the community, school children and their teachers ran into the bush to save their dear lives.
According to Elder Kwame Asare, a native from the community and an eye-witness who spoke with the media, the tanker, which was heading towards Tepa from Kumasi collided with the Sprinter bus with registration number AS 2950-18, which had parked along the roadside in a curve, to pick a passenger. He stated that the Tanker, which was in top gear, lost control on seeing the Sprinter and ran into it.
He disclosed that, the tanker veered off the road, exploded and caught fire, which burnt the driver and his mate, including the two year old boy, who was sleeping at the time of the accident.
Nana Agyemang Prempeh, Director-General of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) who was in the Ashanti region for official duty and Metropolitan NADMO Director rushed to the scene to sympathise and console with the family of the victims.
The Director General assured that NADMO and the Assembly will support the community with mattresses, blankets and mosquitoe nets, whilst the Assembly, through the District Chief Executive (DCE), was arranging for residents to put re-settled in classrooms and church premises.
ADO 1 WikanaGbadomi, the Tepa Municipal Fire Commander said his outfit is doing an assessment of the incident.
