An Accra Circuit Court has remanded five police officers who have been accused of committing various crimes such as robbery and giving bribe to influence public officer, contrary to sections 23(1) and 252(1) of the Criminal Offences Act1960 (Act 29).
The accused persons are, General Corporal Redeemer Gameli, General Constable (G/Const) Wishwell Odoo, G/Const Evans Amwagsi, G/Const Lawat Agyapong and G/Const Sena Kuvordo.
The court presided over by Her Honour Rosemary Baah Torsu refused the accused persons bail application and said that it will be considered on the next adjourned date, which is June 9.
Meanwhile, the brief facts presented by the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Evans Kesse indicated that the complainant in the case is one Jeffery Mackeon Yeboah, who is a student, businessman and lives at Ashalley Botwe.
He narrated to the court yesterday that accused persons are serving police officers attached to the Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) at the National Police Headquarters in Accra where they usually perform vehicular patrol duties.
According to him on May 24, 2001 at about 02:00am, the complainant was on board an Uber taxi around UPSA area when the accused persons who were on board Operation Calm Life Police Service vehicle with arms meant for night patrol duties accosted him and forcibly removed him from the Uber taxi into the police patrol vehicle.
The accused persons falsely accused the victim of having been involved in scamming, hence threatened the complainant with harm and asked him to hand over to them every penny on him. The accused persons were alleged to have seized the complainant’s phone when he was in the police vehicle with them.
By this time, the accused persons together with the complainant had drove the vehicle from Madina to Awudome cemetery.
The prosecutor said the accused persons threatened to harm the complainant should he fail to “hand over to them cash of GH¢20,000.00.”
He said this threat was accompanied by a gun being pointed at the complainant and by that the accused persons asked Mr Yeboah to transfer cash from his bank account through online banking system into a mobile money account.
The accused persons continued to hold the complainant hostage in the police patrol to Kwame Nkrumah Circle, where they met another accomplice of theirs who was in civil dress.
“Their accomplice joined them in the police patrol vehicle and they ordered the victim to transfer cash of GH¢20,000.00 from his bank account into mobile money account number […].” he said. “The victim, acting upon the instructions of the accused persons amidst threat of harm, transferred cash of GH¢20,000.00 from his Ecobank account.”
ASP Kesse added that the accused persons having robbed the complainant of his money, the officers deleted the transaction records on his phone and sent Mr Yeboah to the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and a taxi was ordered for him to join.
However, Mr Yeboah logged a complainant at the Kaneshie District Police Station, for which investigations led to the arrest of the five serving police officers.
A cash exhibit of the GH¢20,000.00 retrieved from the accused persons and after their arrest, they allegedly bribed the investigator with cash in a sum of GH¢2,500.00 to cover up.
