The former Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwa has declared that his eight years experience in parliamentary service, coupled with his knowledge in cyber security and legal education, are enough credentials to place him in a position to deliver as the mayor of Kumasi, when offered the opportunity by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
After selecting the last batch of deputy ministers, the President is yet to take the next step of nominating MMDCEs.
In the midst of serious lobbying for Chief Executive officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), the former law maker, who was one time member of ECOWAS Parliament and also served on several committees in Ghana’s Parliament, including Defence and Interior, Roads and Transport among others, disclosed that Kumasi has become a Cosmopolitan city, with emerging socio-economic challenges.
In his view, therefore, Kumasi needs a young and energetic inspirational mayor who can resonate well with the city’s young entrepreneurs and the business community to fashion out result driven solutions to these challenges for the betterment of the city.
Speaking in an interview with The Chronicle in Kumasi, Collins Amankwah said his long standing unblemished track record, combined with his dedication to the service of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) notwithstanding, his passion for the city’s development, coupled with his entrepreneurial competence are clear manifestation of a leader whose potentials have been harnessed for the service of the nation and KMA as a city authority.
The former Manhyia MP, however, maintained that adequate knowledge about Kumasi’s challenges and one’s ability to discover the solutions appear critical for the job, but he was quick to remind members of the NPP that the president has the sole prerogative and constitutional mandate to nominate any individual of his choice for consideration into the office to any of the MMDAs.
Responding to some of the reasons why his name keeps coming up in the media as an obvious choice for the next Kumasi mayor, the former Manhyia North legislator says he is unable to profess a reason except to say that in his public life he is widely known as a public servant who operates an open door policy and has a listening ear, which in his view variously identifies him with people he has the mandate to serve.
He noted that dedication to the ideals of NPP, a fresh brain with well rehearsed vision and a passion for results driven initiatives are his guiding principles and same will be pursued with determination bearing in mind the broad policy frame work of the president and the party’s ideology.
These, he said, will at all times remain central of his administration when the opportunity is presented to him to serve as the mayor of Kumasi.
Meanwhile, as many as seven members of the New Patriotic Party in Kumasi, including the incumbent mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, are currently lobbying within the corridors of power for the top job at KMA.
The rest are the Ashanti Regional Secretary of NPP, Mr. Samuel Pyne, the former MP for Nhyiaeso constituency, Kennedy Kankam, the former CEO of Public Sector Reforms, Mr. Kusi Boafo, the Metro head of Urban Roads Department, Inj. Nana Atta Poku Agyemang and one Mr. Kwabena Manu.
Checks by this paper indicated that these personalities have already had their names submitted to the office of the president for consideration. It can be argued that these personalities are coming on board with huge wealth of experiences from diverse backgrounds.
