President Akufo-Addo has stressed the need for the private sector to look at investing in waste management in the country, owing from the 7,517,514 metric tons of waste generated in Ghana.
According to the President, the development presents enormous investment opportunities and thus, invited the private sector companies to consider that.
The President explained that rapid population growth with its consequent increase in human activities at the residential, commercial and industrial level meant that waste generation activities continue to be a challenge in the country.
He said that: “Currently, in total, we generate some 7,517,514 metric tons of waste. This situation, you would agree presents enormous investment opportunities for which the private sector can take advantage. I would, therefore, reiterate my invitation for more private sector companies to collaborate with the government in creating business opportunities in the waste management space, such as waste-to-energy, materials, recovery and cycling and compositing.”
President Akufo-Addo assured that, government will continue to create an enabling environment, where private sector players would have the opportunity to help provide a sustainable business environment.
The President was speaking yesterday at a ceremony in Accra, to outdoor some 101 waste management trucks.
The trucks, which are the first batch of 500 trucks, are to augment the existing fleet of vehicles to improve waste collection and transportation in the country.
President Akufo-Addo commended the importer, which has been at the forefront of waste management in the country to the giant strides it had taken so far. I encourage the company to continue with the good work and help support the government to make the country clean and achieve the Green Ghana objective.”
The procurement of the trucks, the President said, was a clear manifestation of the commitment of progressive elements in the private sector to work with the government to deliver quality infrastructure in this case, addressing the waste management situation in the country.
However, he noted that the government remains committed to achieving our development objective as well as its targeting under the United Nations Sustainable development goals, that is Health under goal three, waste and sanitation under goal six, decent work and economic growth under goal eight, sustainable cities and communities under goal 11, and climate change under goal 13.
