The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Justina Marigold Assan, has called on chiefs to commit themselves to government’s resolve to end the galamsey menace in the country.
According to Mrs Assan, government’s resolve to end illegal mining in forest reserves and water bodies cannot yield the expected results if the chiefs do not commit themselves to it.
The Minister made the call yesterday when she paid a courtesy call on the chiefs of Assin Breku during her official visit to the Assin North and Central Districts.
She further reiterated that for the fight against galamsey to be won to save our forest reserves and water bodies from depletion, stakeholders have a major role to play.
She, therefore, charged the chiefs who are custodians of the lands on which galamsey activities are done to appreciate the extent of destruction caused by illegal mining and collaborate with government to fight it. She further stated that failure to end the menace as quickly as possible would have dire consequence with concomitant effect on every Ghanaian, since the activities directly affect our water bodies, which are the main source of water for Ghanaians.
The Tufuhene of Assin Breku, Nana Frimpong Bash I assured her that the chiefs would do everything possible within their power to support government’s efforts to win the war against illegal mining.
He noted that unemployment among the youth in the area was a major challenge.
