The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Upper Denkyira East Constituency in the Central Region, Dr. Festus Awuah Kwofie, has called on Ghanaians to support the national tree planting initiative to give the country a new lease of life.
Speaking on the occasion of Tree Planting Day in his constituency last Friday, Dr. Awuah Kwofie said a lot of energy and resources had gone into the procurement of different species of tree seedlings, and charged the citizenry to help protect the trees from the planting stage to maturity.
He warned residents of Dunkwa not to cut down trees planted in their neighborhood, but, instead, put containers in their places pointing out that the municipal authorities would deal drastically with anyone found culpable.
The MP gave the assurance that efforts would be made to ensure that land destroyed through illegal mining activities in the area would be reclaimed with trees to make it useable for farming purposes once again.
The Dunkwa Forest District Manager, Mr. Maxwell Oteng Agyekum, said, “Climate change that we are seeing tells us to plant enough trees throughout the country as a way of restoring the climate to enable us experience enough rainfall to enable our cocoa and foodstuffs grow well.”
Okoforobour Obeng Nuako III, Dunkwahene, on his part, said trees have served as medicine from time immemorial, adding that they should be protected rather than destroyed.
He told residents of Dunkwa to help nurture trees in front of their houses from the day they were planted and not destroy them.
