The Director of Strategy, Research and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Samuel Appiah Darko has revealed that the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has survived two separate assassination attempts on his life, underscoring what officials describe as the grave risks associated with fighting corruption in Ghana.
Sammy Darko, as he is popularly known, who was speaking on Joy FM’s News file programme over the weekend, noted that the nature of the OSP’s work, which involves covert operations and pursuing powerful individuals exposes officers to significant danger, hence the office’s insistence on protecting staff identities.
“It is well known. The Special Prosecutor has survived two assassination attempts,” he stated emphatically.
Mr Sammy Darko disclosed that the threats are not limited to the SP alone. He recounted how he himself had once been handcuffed, beaten and dragged from his office by 17 police officers, during an earlier clash, saying the job places officers in constant jeopardy.
“Sometimes I don’t even live in one place,” he added, stressing that the individuals the OSP confronts “are very powerful.”
Citing an ongoing fuel diversion case involving alleged losses of GH?800 million, GH?600 million and GH?80 million respectively, he said such suspects are often hostile and desperate.
“You think these people will be happy when you are there? Certainly not,” he remarked.
He further noted that the OSP has dragged “former Commissioner-General and one of the most powerful men in Ghana” before court, making officers frequent targets of intimidation.
Touching on investigations into the alleged assassination attempts, Mr. Sammy Darko said inquiries “have been conducted in the past” but declined to provide details, citing national security restrictions.
He also condemned the earlier leakage of an internal memo containing names of OSP officers, which exposed them to threats and nearly caused some to resign.
“If we don’t put out their names, it is because we are protecting them and their families,” he stressed.
