Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has applauded Star Oil Ghana Ltd for launching its Fuel Now, Pay Later scheme, describing the move as a bold step toward expanding Ghana’s emerging credit economy.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Monday, Dr. Bawumia congratulated the company and its “bold and visionary CEO” for rolling out a system that allows drivers and other consumers to buy fuel on credit using their Ghana Card, backed by an individualised credit scoring system.
According to him, the concept — which he first introduced publicly last year — was widely doubted at the time, but its practical rollout by a major Oil Marketing Company (OMC) demonstrates growing confidence in Ghana’s digital infrastructure.
“A credit economy is so vital in making life a lot less stressful for many people in advanced economies,” he wrote. “Thankfully, in Ghana we have put in place the critical foundational pillars to underpin an efficient credit economy using the Ghanacard as an anchor.”
He pointed to complementary systems such as the digital address system, mobile money interoperability, and the national credit scoring framework as essential components that now make large-scale consumer credit viable.
Dr. Bawumia expressed optimism that other OMCs and businesses would adopt similar credit-based services to ease the financial burden on Ghanaian workers. He said such initiatives could allow the public to purchase a wide range of goods and services on credit and pay conveniently based on their Ghana Card-linked credit score.
He concluded his message with praise for the company: “Ayekoo to Star Oil Ghana!”
The Fuel Now, Pay Later scheme is expected to provide short-term relief to commercial and private drivers facing rising operational costs, while further testing the robustness of Ghana’s national digital identity and credit scoring systems.
