A 48-year-old Civil Servant, Augustina Aboagyewaa Armah, has appeared before the Accra Circuit Court ‘3’ for allegedly defrauding a student of GH¢11,200 under the pretext of securing his enlistment into the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
Augustina Armah pleaded not guilty to a single count of defrauding by false pretence, contrary to Section 131 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Presiding judge, Her Honour Susana Eduful, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 with two sureties. The sureties are required to be public servants earning not less than GH¢1,500 monthly.
The case has been adjourned to October 2, 2026.
Presenting the facts to the court, prosecutor Inspector Felix Agyei said the complainant, Solomon Asante, is a student residing at Teshie, in the Greater Accra Region, while the accused also lives in the same area.
According to the prosecution, sometime in August 2022, Augustina Armah informed the complainant’s grandmother that she had access to “protocol slots” for recruitment into the Ghana Immigration Service and requested that interested persons be brought to her.
Based on this representation, the grandmother introduced the accused to the complainant.
Inspector Agyei told the court that the complainant, convinced by the accused’s claims, paid a total amount of GH¢11,200 to Augustina Armah to facilitate his recruitment into the GIS.
The accused allegedly assured the complainant that he would be enlisted as part of the 2022 Ghana Immigration Service recruitment exercise.
However, the accused failed to fulfil the promise and did not secure the complainant’s recruitment as stated.
Following repeated unsuccessful attempts to get his money or recruitment slot, the complainant reported the matter to the police on August 18, 2025.
The prosecution said Armah was subsequently arrested and, in her cautioned statement, admitted receiving the money.
She claimed she handed the entire amount over to another person but failed to provide information that could lead to the arrest of the said individual.
The accused was therefore charged and brought before the court to answer to the offence.
The case continues on the adjourned date.
