The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has condemned what it describes as an unprovoked attack on a journalist of the Class Media Group by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) during a fire outbreak at Kasoa.
The victim, Mr. Samuel Addo, was assaulted while performing his professional duties at the scene of the incident, an act PRINPAG says constitutes a serious violation of press freedom and Ghana’s democratic values.

In a statement issued and signed by Emmanuel Opare Djan, Public Affairs & External Relations Officer of PRINPAG, the Association described the attack as unacceptable, stressing that any attempt to intimidate, obstruct or physically harm journalists in the line of duty undermines the constitutional guarantees of media freedom enshrined under Article 162 of the 1992 Constitution.
The Association emphasised that journalists play a vital role in Ghana’s democracy by informing the public, promoting accountability and ensuring transparency and must, therefore, be protected rather than harassed or attacked.
PRINPAG has accordingly called on the Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of the Interior to launch a prompt, thorough, and transparent investigation into the incident. It insisted that those responsible must be identified and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
“Securing justice in this matter is essential not only for Mr. Samuel Addo, but also to send a clear message that assaults on journalists will not be tolerated in a democratic society,” the statement noted.
The Association further urged security agencies and emergency service personnel to respect the work of journalists, particularly during emergency operations where public interest reporting is critical.
PRINPAG also expressed solidarity with Mr Samuel Addo and other journalists who continue to operate under increasingly challenging and sometimes hostile conditions, reaffirming its commitment to defending the safety, rights, and independence of media practitioners nationwide.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of journalists covering emergencies and security-related assignments across the country.
