As Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno marks his first anniversary in office, today, March 13, 2026, his tenure has been nothing short of remarkable successes. In just one year, he made significant strides in transforming the Ghana Police Service, earning him widespread acclaims such as the ‘Turnaround Tiger’.
Under his leadership, the police service has witnessed a major overhaul with over twelve thousand eight hundred and two (12,802) officers and men promoted, clearing a decade-long backlog of promotions.
The cases of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Benjamin Agordzor who was denied promotion when his mates received theirs to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) and that of Chief Superintendent Stellar Sedame has become easy point of reference for his taste for justice.
Both were accordingly promoted, even though on retirement.
This move has bolstered morale and motivation among officers, reflecting Mr Yohuno’s commitment to the welfare of the rank and file.
The ‘Turnaround Tiger’ has also intensified efforts to combat crime, with notable successes in disbanding major criminal gangs, intercepting illicit drugs and recovery of stolen arms and munitions.
Mr Yohuno’s leadership has been credited with improving security across the country, collaborating to combat subregional crimes and thereby earning him praise from communities and stakeholders alike.
His emphasis on merit base promotions and recognition of outstanding officers has fostered a culture of excellence within the service.
Thirty-five (35) officers were promoted for their role in the Adabraka gold robbery arrests, while thirty (30) others received promotions for their bravery in retrieving stolen AK47 assault rifles.
He ensures that various units in the service are vibrant with what he calls self-motivation by personnel hence in any corner, police are seen excelling to attract the Chief Constable’s attention.
It is worth noting that, the IGP is credited with crimefighter extraordinary for a simple reason that, his men either foils before it gains root or applies all means available to unearth after occurrence.
For the first in the history of the the Ghana Police Service, an Asantehene paid a royal visit to the IGP at the Police Headquarters in Accra to consolidate the relationship between the police and Manhyia Palace.
This was on January 6, 2026, when Asantehene, Nana Osei Tutu II and his entourage were greeted with a colourful parade by the Police Royal Ladies. On February 3, 2026, the same Police Royal Ladies in a reciprocal move by the administration stormed the Akwasidae celebration with brilliant displays.
The last time Police mounted guard of honour during Akwasidae celebration was on February 3, 1957, by the Mounted Squadron during Nana Agyemang Prempeh II’s reign as the Asantehene.
As IGP completes the first year, his vision for a professional and people centered police service is taking shape.
