The Northern Regional Police Command have commenced investigation into the killing of a sub-chief during the celebration of the Fire (Bugum) festival on Thursday night at Kumbungu.
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohammed Yussif Tanko who disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times in an interview yesterday said the deceased identified as Mumuni Haruna, chief of Chanzaigu was shot by another sub chief, Alhaji Iddirisu Sayibu.
He explained that Alhaji Sayibu who is currently at large was said to have pulled out an AK 47 and fired into the air twice during the celebration.
The PRO said the riffle dropped off the hands of Alhaji Sayibu and discharged a bullet which hit the neck of the deceased.
DSP Tanko said Haruna was rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The PRO said the body of the Haruna has been deposited at the mortuary of TTH pending autopsy.
DSP Tanko stated that the killer has been on the run but emphasised that the police have intensified efforts to apprehend him.
He added that the police have begun investigations into the incident and appealed to the residents to exercise restraint while police continue with due process.
The PRO said there was calm in Kumbungu but information reaching the Ghanaian Times indicated that the youth of the community are becoming impatient about the unfortunate demise of the chief.
With the exception of the Kunbungu incident the fire festival had been peaceful across the length and breadth of region.
