The Goaso District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Richard Hornuro, has observed that people who fall prey to mobile money fraudsters are mostly ‘greedy’ and those in the haste to make wealth.
He questioned why people who had not entered into any promotion or lottery of telecommunication companies, easily give their consent to fraudsters who contact them for purported prizes won.
He said, “If you want to be rich, work harder and stop opening your arms for monies and prizes that you have not worked for.”
DSP Hornuro was speaking at a public forum organised by MTN Ghana, at Goaso in the Asunafo North municipality of the Brong-Ahafo Region.
The District Police Commander pointed out that, some mobile money merchants were not faithful and thus connive with fraudsters to swindle unsuspecting subscribers, particularly illiterates.
He urged the public to be wary of sophisticated mobile money fraud syndicates and also called on network providers to tighten their cyber security as well as weed out ‘criminal merchants’.
Mr. Michael Akwasi Amengor, Brong-Ahafo Territory Sales Controller-MTN, noted that lack of a single national data system was largely affecting the fight against mobile money fraud.
This situation, he stated, makes it very difficult to trace perpetrators, adding, “It is a threat to government’s financial inclusion agenda and the economy at large.”
Mr. Amengor indicated that nationwide enrollment of Ghana Card by the National Identification Authority would help reduce the trend and therefore, urged the NIA to fast-track the registration process.
The Coordinator, MTN Corporate Services-Northern Ghana, Mrs. Charity Darko, said MTN Ghana Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the company had in 10 years invested more than US$13.45 million in various interventions across the country.
According to her, about 142 completed projects in education, health and economic empowerment had been distributed evenly nationwide.
Mrs. Darko added that the Foundation had awarded more than 1,000 scholarships to students.
