Residents of Asuatuare and Osuwem in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, as part of activities making this year’s Founder’s Day celebrations, on Friday undertook a clean-up to rid the area of filth.
They cleared bushy paths along the Asuatuare-Osuwem road, filled pot holes with gravels, and desilted choked drains in the two communities.
The exercise was to also adequately prepare the two communities for the annual Adegbor festival of the chiefs and people of Osudoku Traditional area.
It was organised by the Shai Osudoku District Assembly in conjunction with the Army Recruits Training Centre of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) at the Shai Hills, youth groups, the Ghana Fire Service and the various market women associations.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Shai Osudoku, Mr Daniel Akuffo, urged local councils to do more to ensure that the people supported the President’s vision of making Accra the cleanest region in Africa.
According to the DCE, the founder’s day celebrations would be set aside annually as a day for general cleaning in the area in honour of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, first President of Ghana.
“I am really surprised at the massive turn out, meaning the residents are really buying into the government’s clean Accra Campaign, and everything possible would be done to sustain the exercise,” he said.
Mr Akuffo tasked the sanitation taskforce to continue educating the residents on the need to keep their surroundings clean, saying, “anyone who falls out of the law would not be spared because the stiffest sanctions will be applied.”
