The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey has supported 200 petty traders in his constituency with a total of GH¢60, 000.
From his MPs common fund, the aid was presented to four churches yesterday (Sunday) for onward distribution to the beneficiaries. Each church received GH¢15,000 for 30 of its members.
The churches are New Town and Kotobabi congregations of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Elim Assembly of the Church of Pentecost and Christ Apostolic Church, Caprice.
A committee, set up by the respective churches, would select the beneficiaries.
At the respective churches, Mr Quartey who is also the Deputy Minister of the Interior said the gesture was in fulfilment of a recent promise he made to give less privileged in the churches, a sustained source of livelihood.
He told the Ghanaian Times the churches were selected at random, recounting that he had supported the Muslim community in similar ways as part of efforts to ensure fairness.
He said in the coming months, he would use his allocation of the Social Intervention Fund, to support more people in the constituency.
Mr Quartey said once challenges with Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) was resolved, there would be more support for small businesses.
The leaders of the various churches thanked the MP for the support and pledged to ensure they were well used for its intended purpose.
