The National Youth Authority (NYA) has urged the youth to develop the habit of volunteerism to advance the socio-economic development of society.
In a statement issued on Wednesday to mark this year’s Founders Day celebrations, the Authority entreated young people to build “selfless and patriotic traits that will go a long way to equip them assume roles as productive and responsible citizens.”
Founders Day, marked every September 21, is to honour the life and ideals of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah who fought for the independence of the country.
The NYA in the statement encouraged the youth to also shun all unproductive excesses that impede national development and engage in activities that would enhance their wellbeing and strengthen peace in the country.
“Do not relent in the quest to make peace building a cornerstone for sustainable development and also learn about our nation’s history, traditions and culture which we are to uphold at all times,” it admonished.
Taking note of government efforts to make education accessible to all young person’s through programmes such as the Free SHS policy, the Authority asked that students to commit to their studies.
“Be committed to the noble ideals of humility, patience, discipline and uprightness and eschew all manner of negative conduct that will be detrimental to your development and wellbeing,” it advised.
