A scene from a netball game
The President of the Netball Association of Ghana (NAG), Reverend Emmanuel Nikoi has said the association was working hard to create a new image for the sport in the country.
“Netball has not died a natural death as being speculated by some followers of sports. We as an association will soon roll out some measures to make it even more popular and a sport of choice for Ghanaians.”
He lamented netball’s bane has been the lack of funds syndrome that has plunged a number of disciplines into oblivion but was bent on overcoming that challenge to make it very competitive in the country.
“We want to boost the image of netball in Ghana. Netball is a beautiful game just like any of the sporting activities within the sports fraternity but, we usually do not get the funds to organise matches to give it a push.” he mentioned.
And in a bid to make the sport very popular, NAG, he said would move into partnership with other organisations and groups to stage demonstrations at events.
One of such partnerships, Rev. Nikoi indicated would be a recent one with the Women In Sports Association (WISA) which is expected to stage its Achievers Awards ceremony on Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Guests at the awards will be thrilled by a netball demonstration, a move that was welcomed by the Executive Director WISA, Madam Gloria Commodore.
The netball demonstration will be conducted between Shalom Netball Club from Odumasi Krobo in the Eastern Region and Hunters Netball Club from Winneba in the Central Region.
Shalom is one of the leading clubs in the country and currently occupy second on the league table.
Hunters won against Shalom in the just ended international women game organised by the Women’s Commission of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA).
Reverend Emmanuel Nikoi also informed that, the Rising Stars, the junior national team was preparing to play a friendly match against “Bringing Netball Back (BNB) club of Ikoyi, Nigeria in December.
He has, therefore, called on corporate Ghana to come on board to stage a successful match.
