THE Street Academy held its stakeholder’s annual fund raising event to raise funds for the academy’s 2018/19 academic year at the Art Centre in Accra on Saturday.
The non-profitable organisation, which assists the deprived, needy and less fortunate street children seeks to raise an estimated budget of GH¢72,000.00 to run the 2018/19 academic year.
The academy nurtures talents of deprived street children through non-formal education and other extra-curricular activities including sporting activities such as table tennis, boxing, football, and cultural dance and music depending on the talents of the child.
The GH¢72, 000.00 budget estimates for the academic year is to cover expenses such as staff allowance, feeding, teaching and learning materials, administrative cost, utilities, training expenses and other relevant expenses of the Street Academy Project for the academic year.
In a speech read on behalf of the chairman of the event, the Chief Executive of Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Mr Kwasi Agyeman Busia by his deputy Mr Appiah Kubi, he appealed to all stakeholders, corporate bodies and notable faces identified with the academy to support its development.
Speaking to the Times Sports after the event, the Group Head Corporate of Cal Bank, Miss Justina Laina, lauded the idea of the academy and demanded that everyone became a part of it.
“It is a wonderful idea; picking children off the street and giving them skills is a brilliant idea and everybody should try to be a part of things like these, so that we give them opportunities.
The Executive Director of Street Academy, Ataa Lartey, said 45 street children have currently been recruited for the academic year and will be increased to 80 children before the close of the year 2018.
The Board Chair of Street Academy, Mrs Lydia E. A. Sackey-Adoy explained that though the estimated budget was GH¢72, 000, the support can also come in a form of kind.
“We are dealing with street children and we give them breakfast which amount sto GH¢1,500 every month. We also give them learning materials and clothe them with uniforms. We do not really need all the money now. Per the calculation, we need GH¢72, 000.00 to get them to the end of the academic year. If someone wants to support with food stuffs, it will go a long way to help the children,” she said
The Street Academy, since its inception, has produced a number of talents and prominent figures including reputable sports persons such as Malik Jabir, Joseph Tagoe, Addy Ankrah, Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko, Alfred Odei, and Alfred Tetteh.
