Mr. Kwesi Amoako Atta cutting the sod for construction of the Kwafokrom-Apedwa North-bound dual carriage
A total of 1,710 persons have been involved in road accidents on the Kwafokrom-Apedwa stretch along the Accra-Kumasi highway between January and September this year, chairman for the Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Highway, Mr Samuel Ayeh-Paye, has revealed.
Mr Ayeh-Paye who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kraboa-Coaltar in the Eastern Region said the Kwafokrom–Apedwa stretch has in recent times proven to be the most deadly road in the country.
The MP disclosed this on Wednesday when he accompanied the Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwesi Amoako Atta to cut the sod for construction of the Kwafokrom-Apedwa North-bound dual carriage.
The 31.2 kilometre road to be constructed at the cost of GH¢333 million was first awarded during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor but later abandoned.
Mr Atta said the road was abandoned because the previous government owed the contractor, China International Water and Electric Corporation but after a successful renegotiation with the contraction company, it agreed to return to site.
He indicated that work on the Northbound dual carriage would be completed and opened to vehicular traffic within 24 months.
Meanwhile, he said work on the Suhum Overhead has been completed and undergoing safety checks and would become operational by December this year.
The Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, assured that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led administration was putting measures in place to fix all roads by end of 2020.
He reiterated that his ministry was systematically tackling road infrastructure in the country to enhance economic growth.
