Mr Ahmed
Some senior staff of the Jaman North District Assembly are to be summoned before Parliament to answer some questions regarding why they distracted the work of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development by refusing to show up for a meeting.
There are indications that the Assembly might have its prospective District Assemblies’ Common Fund (DACF) suspended for failure to host and cooperate with the Parliamentary Select Committee to perform its duty.
The committee had gone to Sampa, the district capital in the Brong-Ahafo Region to review the assembly’s financial statement to ascertain how public funds were being used judiciously by the Assembly.
It was part of the five-member committee’s two-day working visit to three municipalities that is, Berekum East, Asunafo North and Jaman South and four districts, namely Banda, Asunafo South, Asutifi North and Asutifi South in the region.
The committee chaired by Kennedy Nyarko, Member of Parliament (MP) for Akim Swedru embarked on the visit to monitor prudent utilisation of the DACF, the District Development Fund (DDF), Urban Development Grant (UDG), Internally Generated Fund (IGF) and Disability Fund of the assemblies.
It also checked the sanitation situation of those areas to ensure proper sanitation towards quality state of health and general well-being of the populace.
According to Ibrahim Ahmed, MP for Banda and Deputy Minority Whip, a member of the committee, such an act could result in suspension of their DACF which could affect socio-economic development of the area.
“The committee was not on a witch-hunting exercise but to evaluate finances of assemblies to ensure funds received from the government are used properly, judiciously and accurately to achieve its purpose of development to support the fight against corruption.
“The government’s declaration of war in fighting corruption cannot be achieved if assemblies and various institutions are not scrutinised to sit up to perform efficiently and effectively,” Mr Ahmed noted.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye, MP for Odododiodoo and Ranking Member of the committee, urged the assemblies to enact and enforce implementation of sanitation bye-laws to check indiscriminate disposal of waste and littering on the streets to maintain cleanliness and control outbreak of diseases.
“The committee will return to verify if assemblies have taken the necessary steps to secure public funds and I entreat them to intensify their IGF collection to augment DACF for development,” he said. -GNA
