A 47-YEAR-OLD preacher of the Gospel, Apostle Emmanuel Afenu, was on Friday adjudged the best farmer in the Ho West District at a durbar at Abutia-Kissiflui.
For his prize, the married father of two who is the founder and head pastor of the Call Out Ministry at Dzolo-Kpuita took home a brand-new tricycle valued at GH¢ 8,000.
The machine was donated by the MP of the area, Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah.
Apostle Afenu distinguished himself in the area of rice, plantain and tubers cultivation in addition to fish farming.
Thirteen other farmers were honoured at the ceremony which was heralded by carnival drumming and gymnastic displays.
Mr Bedzrah, presenting the award to the best district farmer, urged the various communities to take advantage of government’s firm stance to support large scale agriculture and boost productivity on their farms.
He called on land owners and the assembly to collaborate to set up a land bank to support youth readily with land in large scale agriculture.
“Stool lands are not enough in our area and so we expect families with land to support in the venture,” the MP added.
The DCE, Mr Ernest Apau, announced that 500,000 cocoa, 200,000 cashew, 2,000 of oil palm, 2,000 coconut and 4,000 of citrus seedlings were being nursed for distribution to farmers in the district next year.
Meanwhile, he said that the assembly had distributed 28,000 coupons to farmers to enable them to access subsidised fertilizer.
Togbe Tsali IV, Dufia of Abutia-Kissiflui noted that the function started about three hours behind schedule, saying that important events such as the Farmers Day celebration must be held within an acceptable timeframe to maintain their significance.
