Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), at the Abelemkpe District Fire Station, in Accra, embarked on a safety awareness walk within Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe, Kotobabi and its environs, last Friday.
The event, themed, ‘Effective fire safety management, key to human and economic development’, was aimed at educating the public on fire safety measures.
The personnel held placards with inscriptions, including, ‘Safety is the best insurance for yourself and family’, ‘Frequently change rubber seal in gas cylinders’; ‘Do not play with matches and electricity’; ‘Do not overload socket’ and ‘Avoid vehicular fire by having car fire extinguishers’.
The personnel interacted with the people, students, food joint operators and filling station workers.
The District Fire Officer DO II Benjamin Quarshie said the safety of the citizens was paramount to national development.
“Your lives are very important to us, because without you our economy will be in shutters. Your contribution to the economy is essential to the development of the nation,” DO II Quarshie stressed.
He cautioned the people not to block their doorways with anything that could obstruct movement in case of an emergency, and against filling gas cylinders to the brim as it could trigger fire.
Group Officer GO I Anna Fehyi, asked parents to prevent their children from playing with fire and electrical cords or sockets.
