Members of the Assembly taking oath of office
THE newly created Anloga District in the Volta Region was inaugurated yesterday amid pomp and pageantry, in defiance of a heavy downpour.
The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in a speech read on his behalf by the Volta Regional, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, said that the move was to bring governance to the door-steps of the people and facilitate decentralisation and the rapid development of the area.
“I am sure that you have gathered here for this ceremony very satisfied that you now have your own District Assembly and determined to assist in ensuring the successful execution of its functions for the overall development of your area”, he added.
The President maintained that government was offering a new way of doing things to drive the agenda for change, growth, job creation and prosperity for all and sundry.
In that vein, he said, the investiture of the Anloga District would guarantee effective decentralisation through grassroots participation, better planning and improved service delivery in the communities.
President Akufo-Addo pointed out that the assemblies were essential for equitable development at the local level, for which reason they were the focal points for government’s rural and urban development agenda to provide better opportunities for poverty reduction and enhancement of quality life.
That, he explained, involved the use agricultural regeneration and industrialization as well as urban renewal programmes with emphasis on development and maintenance of urban infrastructure.
The President said that while government was spearheading efforts at accelerating and sustaining decentralization, “I entreat all of you stakeholders to be focused, committed and pursue the agenda of development with one purpose”.
The Awoamefia of Anlo, Torgbi Sri III, paid glowing tribute to President Akufo-Addo, saying that he had acted on his word to make a long dream come true for the people of the area.
He renewed his appeal for a harbour in the district and also the fixing of key roads in key roads to open the new-born district up to greater commercial activities.
The Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Kofi Dzamesi noted that it was only proper for Anloga, the traditional capital of the Anlo State to be a district capital as well, to boost its status.
The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Augustine Collins Ntim, gave the assurance that various logistics and infrastructure needed for Anloga to function smoothly as a district capital would be provided in as soon as possible.
