Rev Ebenezer Akrong
The Greenwich Meridian Presbyterian Church in Tema Community One last Sunday launched its 60th anniversary celebration with a pledge to develop the tourism potential of the Greenwich Meridian line.
The Minister in charge of the church, Reverend Ebenezer Akrong, who made the call, said the church had approached the Ghana Tourism Authority to assist it in developing the Greenwich Meridian line, and publicise it as the centre of the world.
He said, “many people did not know the Greenwich Meridian line (latitude zero degrees), though it was studied in schools, where exactly it passes in Tema and its importance, so developing it into a tourist attraction with a signage, would properly unveil and uniquely identify it to the nation and the world at large.”
Rev. Akrong also said a monument with offices, prayer rooms, sick bay, cultural village would be constructed, “so that anybody who visits would feel the Greenwich Meridian and the world at a go.”
He said the project when completed, would be marketed local and globally to attract notable programmes to the venue, advertise and promote made-in-Ghana products.
He stated that over the past six decades, the church had evangelised, nurtured, and transformed souls to live acceptable and God fearing lives, and that had impacted positively on the development of Tema.
The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La said, “attaining our goals in development, particularly in sanitation, health and security are important”, and called on the church to continue to instill discipline in their members to facilitate and propel the development agenda of the nation.
According to the chairman of the anniversary planning committee, Rev. Timothy Oboubi, the church was established in 1959 by a group of non-natives of Tema who found it necessary to find a place of worship.
“Today, from this humble beginning, the seed which our forefathers were wise to grow has blossomed into an admirable congregation that has over the years contributed positively to society, imparting individuals, families and the communities as a whole,” he said.
