Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan has come under a barrage of attacks after rallying support for the Black Stars ahead of their international friendly against Iceland tonight.
The match, scheduled to start at exactly 8 pm, is part of Black Stars preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and is also the final World Cup warm-up game for Iceland.
But Ghanaians have shown little or no interest in the game. This is after viewing celebrated investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas' documentary, titled Number 12 on Wednesday.
The documentary exposed the rot in Ghana sports, especially the GFA where top officials and referees were caught taking money - including some collecting as little as GH¢200 ($42) - to influence match results in the domestic league as well as push players into national teams.
And, with many disappointed and angry, Gyan took to Twitter to garner support for the Black Stars.
''In spite of the difficult times, my plea is, as we leave the matters to the appropriate authorities, the National Team is out there in a friendly today and still deserves some support cos it's Ghana...#IstandwithmyCountry,'' the country's all-time leading scorer - 51 goals - tweeted.
In spite of the difficult times, my plea is, as we leave the matters to the appropriate authorities, the National Team is out there in a friendly today and still deserves some support cos it's Ghana...#IstandwithmyCountry
But he has been heavily criticised as the calls for officials implicated to relinquish their positions intensify.
One post from a user called Abdel said: ''No one will support you people. Go call Nyantakyi and his family to come support you''
No one will support you people. Go call Nyantakyi and his family to come support you ????
Another, Fri Hoko, tweeted: ''Gyan pls stop that... We're very hurt paaa. Don't talk about the national team again''
Gyan pls stop that.. We're very hurt paaa. Don't talk about the national team again
Masa Shut up????.... Your father paid bribe to secure you and Baffour Gyan playing time in blackstars. We now know.???? Corrupt from day 1.#Number12 #IamAnas https://t.co/z36OYbzuSI
And how do we know this match has not been already influenced already? With the kind of revelations made by Nii Lante Vanderpueye on citi fm this morning, the best solution is a dissolution of the GFA and a halt to all football related stuff until sanity is restored.
I’m really disappointed in you paaa , Go watch the video how Kofi Manu [Blue boy] talk about u ???? u get money in football u used it to invest in boxing ...nonsense
We already know the outcome of the game, which support again? You guys think you can play with our emotions forever, masa find some place and sleep
