The Municipal Chief Executive of New Juabeng, Comfort Asante has advised Junior High School graduates not to fall prey to the vices of internet.
This the Chief Executive believes will save the pupils from jeopardising their future while reaping the benefits of the positive sides of the internet.
“Let me remind you students that the internet has a lot of uses which is both negative and positive but the positives far outweighs the negative. I will therefore urge you to choose the former,” she admonished.
Speaking at the 16th Graduation and Maiden Speech and Prize Giving Day of the RIIS Presby Model Junior High School in Koforidua, the MCE cautioned the pupils that engaging in internet fraud which could land them in jail.
“Recently, some students were arrested in the Tamale Metropolis for engaging in “sakawa” [internet fraud] activities on the internet to dupe unsuspecting people of their money,” she noted.
She also urged the pupils to take Information and Communications Technology (ICT) studies serious as it is now the gateway to the wider world.
“…without ICT skills, Ghanaian children and youth may not be able to adequately compete in the global marketplace and participate fully in society,” Mrs Asante said.
These days one of the questions asked during interviews before one is employed is “are you computer literate,” she added. She also urged the pupils not to be mediocre but rather strive to excel wherever they find themselves.
This Mrs Asante noted, will be good results from the sacrifices of their parents and the government.
“You can’t just be another basic school graduate…you are going to go out there and show the world what you’ve got,” she said.
Deborah A. Nyarko
The Headmistress of the school Deborah A. Nyarko used the opportunity to highlight some problems facing the school. “The school immediately needs an Ultra-modern Staff Common room to enhance our work as teachers” she lamented.
“Classrooms, and the furniture situation here is also not the best,” she said.
