The High Commissioner to Namibia has hinted of plans to revamp the Zuarungu Meat Factory soon under its flagship programme ‘One District One Factory’ policy.
Speaking to Joy Business, Salamatu Forgor, who led a team of Namibian investors made up of government officials and private businessmen to Ghana said plans are far advance to see the factory to come back into operation.
“Part of the investors we brought have been here before. I came into the country with them when I took office as the high commissioner to Namibia and they wanted to know the state of the facility. So we went around with them, inspected the facility to know the exact state of it.”
The meat factory, when it begins operation will boost the socio-economic prospects of livestock production in the three regions of the north.
Ms Forgor said, “currently, they are working with the government with regards to how to revamp the factory. Don’t forget the Namibians have a lot of meat and know how to work on it.
“The factory can supply meat to the West African region which is all part of pushing African countries from trading among themselves.”
Livestock producers within the Upper East Region since have called for the revamping of the Zuarungu Meat Factory under government’s ‘One District One Factory’ policy.
They noted that, although the three regions were noted for their production of livestock, governments have over the years paid lip service to helping smallholder livestock farmers to increase production to meet the high demand for meat in the country.
“Also, instead of transporting the animals from Upper East, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger to Accra and Kumasi, they could be slaughtered in the Zuarungu meat factory, stored and airlifted or transported to Accra thus saving cost and boosting the economy of the region,” the High Commissioner noted.
