The Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku in Accra has donated a van, worth ?60,000 to members of the More Hope for Disabled Foundation to assist in their skills training and development projects.
Dr Okoe Boye also provided two new taxis worth 20,000 each to unions, tricycles, vulcanizing machine, barbering and other commercial equipment to small scale workers under the Dr Okoe Boye skills support project which was launched, Friday at the Ledzokuku constituency in the Greater Accra region.
The project, according to the MP is to provide support for his constituents who are already in business but need tools, equipment or logistics to expand.
This project which is in collaboration with a micro-finance is a build up on the zero interest loans programme he launched in 2018.
Addressing the beneficiaries and members of the general public, the MP explained some of the beneficiaries, like the barbers, all of whom were invited without partisan interest, will be given the equipment for free.
However, the beneficiaries of the taxis will pay the exact amount of ?20,000 after two years without any interest. “They would have paid over ?40,000 for the same period, if it were a private venture,” he added.
In order to prevent the unseen hand of politics determining who the beneficiaries are, Dr Okoe Boye said they had to donate the cars to the unions in the constituency so they will select a beneficiary who will pay back the amount within a two year period.
The beneficiaries of the tricycles and the vulcaniser machine have a year each to pay back the cost of the equipment.
Given the economic situation of the people with disability, the MP said he has decided to fully take the cost of the van and pay for it within the two year period.
Touting the credentials of the Akufo-Addo led administration, the MP said the government as part of its 2016 campaign, promised change, an agenda for jobs for its people.
In line with that promise, companies which hitherto had collapsed are now beginning to see a revamp, he noted, citing, the Anglogold Ashanti reopening as an example.
He said employment into the public sector, which was only few years ago frozen under an IMF programme has been lifted, with teachers, doctors now beginning to receive their appointment letters.
While the president is doing his part at the central level, Dr Okoe Boye said it is incumbent on MPs to assist at the local and constituency levels, hence his skills support project.
The Procurement Minister and Deputy Majority Leader Adwoa Safo who chaired the function encouraged the constituents to remain solidly behind their MP for the development of the constituency.
She said an MP who thinks about his constituents and always wants the best for them can only be supported to keep up the good job.
The Vice Chairman of the constituency, Mr Clifford Korley took the beneficiaries through tips to be successful as entrepreneurs and small scale business men and women.
Mr Korley charged the beneficiaries to have a solid vision, employ like minds and use their time judiciously if they want to succeed in the chosen areas of business.
