16 Zongo communities have confirmed their participation in the 2019 Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup following the launch on Wednesday in Accra.
The 16 Zongo communities include Alajo, Tudu, Kasoa, Nima, Madina, Nungua Zongo, Tunga(Dansoman), Accra Newtown, Darkoman, Nsawam Zongo, Ashiaman, Sabon Zongo, Sukura, Ashaley Botwe, Fadama and Mamobi.
The competition named after the National Chief Imam and organized under his auspices brings Zongo communities together to compete in a football competition as part of social events to mark the end of Ramadan.
The competition started in 2015 with eight Zongo communities, it increased to 12 in the second edition while the last two editions saw an increase to sixteen, a number which has been maintained for this year.
Present at the launch were Hon. Boniface Abubakar Sadique, Minister of State at the office of the Vice President, Dr Inusah Osman- a representative of the Chief Imam, Black Stars assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko and Ghana FA presidential aspirant Winfred Osei Palmer.
Speaking at the event, Mr Osei Kwaku Parma expressed his readiness and willingness to support this year’s competition.
"I have been supporting this and several competitions to develop talents for mother Ghana and the world in general and I will support this year's edition," Mr Parma said.
For his part, Hon. Boniface commended the organisers for coming up with such a brilliant initiative which will unify the Zongo communities.
"During My tenure as the Minister of Zongo and inner city "I used football to reconcile the people of Asawasi in kumasi," he said.
Tournament coordinator, Tamimu Issah assured the gathering that this year's Ramadan Cup will be remarkable and worth to watch. He shared an exciting story by saying that if you go to Chief Imam's living room you will see the maiden edition's picture when he came to commemorate the tournament.
The tournament will be held at Wembley Sports Stadium in Kotobabi on the eve of the Idr Fitr.
The launch of the 4th edition was chaired by Minister of State at the Vice-President's Office, Boniface Abubakar Saddique.
This year’s tournament has been supported by NASCO, Perla Mineral Water and Afro Arab group of companies.
The draw for the preliminary stage was also held at the launch with reigning champions Mamobi to face Fadama.
