Police killed four bandits and seized four guns Friday night in Bubanza province, 15 km west of the Burundian capital Bujumbura, police said Saturday.
“Four armed bandits were killed by security forces after they stole citizens’ belongings last (Friday) night around 20:00 (18:00 GMT) at Buringa in Gihanga. Security pursued the bandits and exchanged gunfire at Rukoko forest reserve where they had fled,” Gihanga District Administrator Leopold Ndayisaba said.
According to him, gunfire was still heard Saturday morning.
Burundian Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye said four guns were seized during the operation.
Nkurikiye added that people who had been abducted by the armed bandits came back while stolen objects were recovered.
Security has been disrupted for several times in villages located near Burundi’s Rukoko forest reserve with thefts and ambushes on the road linking Bujumbura to Cibitoke close to those villages.
Thefts and ambushes are often mounted by gunmen who often retreat to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s territory via Rukoko forest reserve. Enditem
