The United Nations special representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel Mohamed Ibn Chambas advised Gambia and relevant stakeholders to put the national interest first as they set to make reforms on the Constitution and public institutions, local medias reported Monday.
“I urge all Gambian stakeholders to put the national interests above all other considerations as they move ahead with the national reform agenda,” he said on Sunday at the end of his two-days visit.
Chambas also reiterated the commitment of the Office of the United Nations for West Africa and the Sahel to continue supporting Gambia in consolidating democracy and promoting sustainable development.
His visit to Gambia was purposely to congratulate the people and the Gambian government for the peaceful, inclusive, and well-organized legislative elections on April 6.
“I wholeheartedly commend the progress achieved by the Gambians with the conduct of these elections, which confirmed the country’s steady march towards sustained peace, democracy and stability,” he concluded. Enditem
