
This is bad news for Sears shoppers.
Retailers are closing thousands of stores following years of declines in sales and customer traffic.
Bankruptcies accounted for a large chunk of the stores that have closed or are closing. But a tough physical retail environment stemming from steeper online competition is also being blamed.
We compiled a list of the 8,053 closures that were announced in 2017.
Radioshack — 1,430 stores
Radioshack filed for bankrupcy in 2017, and announced it will close all its stores.
Payless — 900 stores
Payless also filed for bankrupcy this year, announcing the closure of about 900 stores.
Ascena Brands — 667 stores
Ann Taylor's parent brand announced hundreds of store closures to close over the next two years. About 250 locations either are to close or all arleady closed, with more than 400 slated to close if rents aren't renegotated.
Walgreens — 600 stores
Walgreens, after announcing purchases of 2,000 Rite Aid stores, announced it will close 600 stores under both banners.

Gymboree — 350 stores

Kmart — 283 stores

The Limited — 250 stores
The Limited shut all its stores in 2017.
Family Christian — 240 stores
Family Christian also went out of business in 2017, closing all its stores.
Hhgregg — 220 stores
Hhgregg closed all its stores in 2017 after failing to find a buyer.
Gap Inc — 200 stores
Gap Inc announced closures of Gap and Banana Republic stores over the next few years.
Bebe — 180 stores
Bebe closed all its stores 2017.
Wet Seal — 171 stores
Wet Seal also closed all its stores in 2017.
Crocs — 160 stores
Crocs scaled back in 2017, announcing it will close over 100 of its stores.
Gamestop — 150 stores
Video game retailer Gamestop announced this year it would close 150 stores after declining sales.
JCPenny — 138 stores

Michael Kors — 125 stores

BCBG — 120 stores
BCBG was completely restructed in 2017. After declaring bankrupcy and closing 120 stores, it was purchased by Marquee Brands.
Sears — 116 stores

American Apparel — 110 stores
American Apparel sold itself to Gildan, who was not interested in maintaining its 110 store footprint.
Gordmans Stores — 106 stores
Gordmans liquidated its stores after bankruptcy this year.
Charming Charlie — 100 stores
Charming Charlie, a chain of jewlery sellers, filed for bankrupcy in December.
BareMinerals — 100 stores

Staples — 70 stores

CVS said it was closing 70 stores to cut costs in 2017.

Perfumania — 64 stores
Perfumania annoucned its closing a quarter of its stores after filing for bankrupcy.
Alfred Angelo — 60 stores
Bankrupt bridal retailer Alfred Angelo closed all its stores this year.
Abercrombie & Fitch — 60 stores
Abercrombie announced more store closures as the teen retailer tries to right its ship.

Lululemon announced it is shuttering its kid's chain, Ivivva, closing 40 stores and turning the rest into Lululemon stores.

Gander Mountain — 32 stores
Gander Mountain annoucned it is closing some stores, but not all. After being purchased in a bankrupcy auction earlier this year, the rest of the store's futures are uncertain.
Benny's — 31 stores
New England retailer Benny's closed all its stores in 2017, and shuttered for good.
2nd Time Around — 30 stores
Consignment shop 2nd Time Around aburptly closed all its stores in 2017.
True Religion — 27 stores
True Religion announced it plans to close 27 stores after filing for bankruptcy.
American Eagle — 25 stores

Target — 12 stores

Tailored Brands — 11 stores
Tailored Brands announced it is closing eight of its Jos of A. Bank stores, and 3 Men's Warehouse tuxedo specailty stores.
Neiman Marcus — 10 stores
Neiman Marcus announced it will be closing 10 of its discount Last Call stores.
