Some parliamentary candidates in the Ashanti region are complaining about the prevention of some voters by the Electoral Commission (EC) officials from exercising their franchise at the special voting which took off today.
Some of the security personnel and Journalists were not allowed to vote because their names were not captured in the voter’s register.
Others were instructed by the EC officials at constituencies such as Nhyiaeso, Subin, Asokwa, Manhyia South to return to their original polling stations to cast their votes.
At the Tafo Pankrono constituency, Barima Owusu of Ultimate FM reported that there was a mix up in pages 18 and 19 of the voter register.
‘248 people were expected to vote but the EC officials added 243 to the register making it a total of 527,’ he reported.
The parliamentary candidate for Asokwa Madam Patricia Appiagyei who was going round the polling centers in an interview with Ultimate News’ Benjamin Yamoah, called on the EC to address the issue saying it will have dire consequences on the main elections.
Eno Safo also reported that the MP for Nyiaeaso constituency Kennedy Kankam said it will be wrong for security forces who are supposed to man the polling stations on elections day seen in queues voting.
This he said will affect the voting as they will not be able to prevent clashes if possible adding that the country already lacks security personnel.
‘This is a bad omen for the country’s democracy, because on elections day these people are supposed to be on guard, the number that will pile up is going to be very huge and we will need security personnel to maintain peace and order, so if care is not taken there is going to be few clashes because some of the security forces would have to vote before reporting for duties,’ he expressed worry.
