Kojo Wilmont National Project Officer of International Organisation for Migration has cautioned Ghanaians trying to seek greener pastures outside the shores of the country to be wary of phony traveling recruitment agencies.
According to him, unlicensed recruitment agencies deceive unsuspecting Ghanaians especially females into securing them juicy jobs abroad only to treat them inhumanely.
Mr Wilmont indicated that their findings showed that a considerable number of Ghanaian female migrant workers are being subjected to inhumane treatment in the Middle East.
There are reported cases of some pushed into prostitution, human trafficking whereas others are even made to sleep with ‘dogs’, lots of them have returned with ‘chilling’ stories.
Speaking with Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko, he called on government and the various stakeholders to implement holistic policies that will protect Ghanaians working abroad especially Middle East.
‘The female worker migrants worked for long hours without salaries and are subjected to inhumane treatment…The stories are chilling, the stories you continue to hear about the Middle East is not really palatable. Something really needs to be done to ensure that our nationals are protected. I might say that its not all migrants who end up finding themselves and subjected to this inhumane treatment. But those who fall victims to fraudulent and inhumane treatment is going on. Migration is not a bad thing but needs to be managed, this whole situation of migration management needs to be looked at holistically, and draw reliable policies so that we as a country can try to maximise the benefits,’ he said.
National Project Officer of International Organisation for Migration bemoaned the rate at which Ghanaian migrants die on the Sahara desert crossing the Mediterranean Sea which is a fertile ground for them to trade in one way or the other.
