Staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), in the Eastern Region, will on Wednesday lay down its tools for two hours to picket in all 14 district offices of the company.
The action is to demand severance packages as part of government’s arrangement to subsume the management of the ECG under a private concessionaire.
At an emergency meeting held at the Eastern Regional Office of the ECG, the Local Chairman of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), Abraham Lincoln, insisted that government would have to pay them a package in accordance with the labour act if the state is bent on ceding some ECG staff to a new – Company
“We as workers believe that if the government’s intent is to go ahead to put this company on privatization, then we as workers will also have to think about our involvement or the toil that we have had with this company. Some of us have worked for ten, thirteen and fifteen years. “
“Per the Labour Act, 651 (2003) section 65, where there is going to be a closure or an arrangement or an amalgamation and if these things are going to cause a change between the employer and the employee, then the employees are entitled to have a severance package which is in tandem with our laws.”
“If government has taken the decision to put this company on concession which we believe that has not been successful in any country anywhere, then government should pay us our severance.”
“That way, when we move to a new company we know that all the years we have served ECG that one has been taken care of and when we move to the new company and there is any other issue, then we will handle it at that new company’s level,.” Abraham Lincoln explained.
They contend the sector minister; Boakye Agyarko has refused to respond to their demands triggering the industrial action which will be followed by other actions until the right thing in their estimation is done.
Ultimatefmonline.com gathers that similar press conferences are underway in other regions of the country to galvanize a unified front to undertake the same action across the country.
