The Former Rector of Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Prof. Stephen Adei has bemoaned the state of the country’s educational system saying lazy teachers are becoming national burden.
He said Ghana’s leaders need to adopt a revolutionary tactics to sack all daft teachers who are not imparting any knowledge in pupils.
Prof Adei observed that most of the pupils lack basic knowledge on the subjects they are taught because the teachers know next to nothing.
‘…What we are talking about is a national disaster. Let us dismiss all the teachers, it can be done,… the government have to ask them to apply to teach in schools through the heads and you hold the head teachers accountable whiles the heads hold the teachers accountable, things will be different,…we are in a national crisis and it requires a very revolutionary one and let the concerned teachers worry about themselves in their homes, and we will run a better education system,’ he said.
The former Rector has been questioning the competence of teachers at the basic levels across the country suggesting that they all be dismissed to save the educational sector from being collapsed.
Speaking on Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko, he accused teachers of forming a cabal with their heads thereby deliberately boycotting classes at the detriment of the pupils.
He wondered why the politicians have kept mute about the lackadaisical attitudes of teachers, asking if they will lose votes at their various constituencies if they rebuke the teachers.
‘I’m angry with the politicians for not making the teachers accountable. I think that the government must rise up, they don’t want to take political action for fear of backlash. I’m sure if this is done, the teachers themselves will be happy for producing quality students. And their self image will changed,’ he stated.
He suggested that management of schools be given to churches adding that the Ghana Education Service (GES) offices be decentralised to ensure accountability and supervision in schools.
‘…We are in a very serious situation and the consequences are showing, at least 50% of students who write BECE don’t pass or those who pass are semi-illiterates, in many cases, parents and headteachers pay monies to WAEC examiners and the police will be asked to turn a blind eye so that the students can cheat. Those who are pass are functionally illiterates that is wickedness in the highest order… How can we commit such a fraud against the future of the country?. I think there must be a decentralisation from the GES regional offices to the district level, so that accountability will work, where teachers will be responsible for curricular activities,’ he suggested.
He said logistics and resources in the past at the various schools were not the best as compared to the present state but teachers managed to improvise.
The Ashesi University lecturer at the Business Administration Department said teachers in the olden days had only chalk and blackboards but they were committed to their work.
‘…Today, the average teacher seems to care very little, they don’t teach when they are school, they do very little, the head teachers have no power of discipline or accountability,’ he pointed.
He observed that the poor private schools perform better than the public schools charging teachers to change their attitudes and stop wasting tax payers’ money.
