Provisional statistics received for 2025 from the National Road Safety Authority’s Western Regional office indicate reductions in the number of vehicles involved, persons injured and pedestrian knockdowns as compared to 2024. The total number of vehicles involved in road traffic crashes were 1,090 as compared to 1,119 in 2024, which represents a -2.66% reduction. There was a -6.73% reduction with respect to road traffic crash injuries and -3.10% reduction in pedestrian knockdowns over the same period.
With respect to the number of cases reported, the region recorded 743 in 2024 – a figure that rose to 773 in 2025 and represents a 3.88% increase. The number of persons killed in the region recorded an 8.33% increase over the 2024 figure of 187 to 204 fatalities in 2025.

With respect to the number of vehicles involved in road traffic crashes in the region, private vehicles dominated with 410 representing 37.61%, commercial vehicles followed closely with 406, representing 37.25% of all vehicles involved. Motorcycles and tricycles recorded 274 which represents 25.14%.

A breakdown of injuries and fatalities recorded in 2025 indicates that crashes involving commercial vehicles have 52.96% injury and 17.49% fatality possibility. Crashes involving private vehicles in the region have 40% and 15.12% injury and fatality possibilities respectively. Crashes involving motorcycles and tricycles indicate a 51.46% injury and 25.18% probability of fatalities.
Victor Kojo Bilson, Western Regional Head-National Road Safety Authourity, explained to B&FT in an interview that pedestrians continue to remain highly vulnerable in the region – with 66.67% and 33.33% injury and fatality probabilities with respect to road traffic crashes as shown in the table 1.
He said with a total of 773 road traffic crash cases reported in the region, fatalities contributed 26.39% with injuries contributing 67.27% for 2025.
Males and persons above the age of 18 years continue to dominate fatalities recorded with 80.88% and 79.90% respectively. Female fatalities recorded were 19.12% of the regional figure.

According to him, Western Region ranked fifth out of the sixteen regions with respect to most number of cases reported, persons killed and road traffic injuries for 2025.
Major problems in the region
- Excessive speeding.
- Bad road user behaviours (jumping red lights, driving against traffic, jaywalking, overloading, etc).
- Faded road markings.
- Non-functioning and broken-down streetlights and traffic lights.
Interventions
- Coordinated compliance operations with MTTD and DVLA.
- Stakeholder collaborations.
- Media sensitisation and educational programmes.
- Engagement with transport unions and organisations.
