Hearts of Oak returned to winning ways in the Ghana Premier League on Saturday afternoon, defeating Medeama 1-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Isaac Mensah’s second-half header gave the reigning champions three points, moving them closer to the top four.
The Phobians were the better team in the first half, creating a number of good chances.
Their initial foray almost ended in a goal, but Medeama goalkeeper Kamil Anaba was alert.
Then, following a wonderful play, Kwadwo Obeng Jr’s volley from within the penalty area went wide before Agyenim Boateng shot straight at Anaba.
Obeng Jr had the finest chance, but Anaba denied him.
Anaba’s opposite number Richmond Ayi made one save in the half, pushing away Kwasi Donsu’s strong strike from a free kick outside the box.
Hearts had a penalty appeal turned down by the referee twice after the break, but it didn’t stop them from pressing for the opening goal.
They were rewarded in the 56th minute. Daniel Afriyie Barnieh ran onto a through pass and sent in a great cross, which Mensah headed into the net.
Medeama improved after conceding. They put Ayi to the test a few times with long-range strikes.
However, they came close to conceding again. Obeng Jr’s overhead kick struck the crossbar before the striker was denied by Atingah’s goal-line clearance.
Hearts remain sixth despite the win, however, they are level on points with Medeama, who are fifth.
