The Progressive People’s Party (PPP), has charged the media and Ghanaians in general to be vigilant and not be distracted by the lawsuits dominating the news space following the Electoral Commission’s action that has culminated in multiple lawsuits.
This charge comes after the PPP accused the Electoral Commission of plotting to rig the 2016 elections through litigation with political parties.
The PPP claimed that, the EC is prolonging its litigation with aggrieved political parties to ensure a rushed electoral process, which will compromise the monitoring mechanisms and the credibility of the elections.
But speaking on Eyewitness News, the Director of Policy for the PPP, Kofi Asamoah Siaw, pleaded with citizens not to be distracted by the EC’s court cases.
“All I am pleading with the media and the people of Ghana is that, they should not be distracted by the court action. The Electoral Commission is not going to stop with the PPP case,” he said.
“They are minded to take all of us, divert our attention to a different angle, create a decoy situation so that we don’t ask the legitimate questions that we need to ask.”
Whilst the citizenry and media follow the legal developments, Mr. Siaw urged them to also “pay attention to the important things that matter.”
Peace Council, religious bodies must speak out
Mr. Siaw also bemoaned the inaction on the part of the Peace Council and other relegious bodies, as he urged them to speak out and not allow the EC to hijack the electoral process.
“The silence of the National Peace Council and all the religious bodies is deafening. They need to speak to it because they are citizens first and foremost. They cannot allow this Electoral Commission Chairperson to hijack the electoral process to a destination that is undesirable.”
