The Department of Gender in the Central Region in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has organized a two-day workshop aimed at sensitizing media men on the need to be sensitive with their reportage on Gender-Based Issues.
The workshop sought to teach media personnel to avoid stereotyping in their reportage.
Speaking to Citi News during the two-day workshop, the Central Regional Director for the Department of Gender, Madam Thywill Eyra Kpe said when the media is well informed on Gender-Based Issues it would help pass on right information to the general public.

“We engaged the media for the past two days to deepen their knowledge on issues of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare especially of girls, and Child Marriage,” the Regional Director for Gender noted.
According to Madam Thywill Eyra Ekpe, the two-day workshop also seeks to remind the media of Ghana Journalist Association (GJA)and the National Media Commission(NMC) code of ethics.
Dr. Georgina Yaa Oduro a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast and the Co-ordinator for Advocacy and Outreach (CEGRAD) also urged the media to be circumspect in their reportage adding that they must avoid entrenching stereotyping.

“The media must again avoid misrepresentation of facts and sensationalism in gender reportage since it takes away the real facts from the story,” Dr. Yaa Oduro hinted.
She also called on the media to report accurately, appropriately and then help enhance rather than demonize women which is mostly seen in some reportage the Senior Lecturer mentioned.
