The Dansoman Police have arrested five persons for allegedly producing and selling alcohol mixed with marijuana.
The suspects include a 25-year-old farmer, Alex Awumbisi; Yussif Nuhu, 33, an onion seller; and Kpakpo Quartey, 38, a worker in a slaughterhouse.
The rest, who were arrested from their hideout at Glifey in Dansoman, Accra, are Ayaba Akana, 22, and Alpawumi Bawa, 20, both farmers.
AlakaÂ
It is said the alcohol/marijuana combination is variously known as ‘Alaka’, ‘Under’ or ‘Kingdom’.
Police operatives from the Dansoman Divisional Command chanced on the suspects while the police were undertaking a clampdown on motorbike riders in the Greater Accra Region.
It is alleged that commercial motor riders, popularly referred to as ‘Okada riders’, patronise the drink.
Immediately the police got to the scene, the producers, together with their patrons, took to their heels.
The police gave them a hot chase and arrested the five, while the rest fled.Â
One drum filled with locally distilled alcohol, popularly known as akpeteshie, and a bag full of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana were retrieved.
The Dansoman Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Kwadwo Antwi Tabi, said the suspects would be arraigned.
